Mount Mikeno is noted to stand at a height of 4,437 metres and is the second highest peak in the Virunga Mountains after Karisimbi, and the 13th highest mountain of Africa.Mikeno means “poor” and is so named for its harsh slopes which make it hard for human habitation.Mount Mikeno harbors the most scarce giant mountain gorillas that live on its slopes.
Treks to observe Mikeno’s gorillas normally leave from the nearby Bukima Patrol Post. Getting to Mount Mikeno is a one-hour drive from Goma town north of Lake Kivu, there are large cottages and Mikeno lodge within the forest with good strategic views across the forests. Remarkable key features here include; Sight-seeing, nature walks, mountain hiking, Birding, wild life like hyenas, tree species. Hiking Mikeno can take 5 -6 hours to reach the summit.
Along the way it’s really amazing, you can easily view coffee plantations, waterfalls and village walks with a ranger. It is also good to note, for your successful adventure, obtain, Hiking gears from Mikeno lodge or you could have attained them somewhere else. It is noted that, many tourists come here purposely to trek Gorillas and chimpanzees but later, end up also being attracted by this interesting adventure.
